Professional Lighting with Profoto
What kit do you need to take amazing images? In this sponsored post, we take a closer look at the Profoto range
Recently, we brought you the exciting news of the Profoto D2 – a professional flash head built to deliver incredible speed.
Though this is hugely exciting, Profoto offer a wide range beyond this. If you’re not familiar with their products, or simply need a refresh, here’s our guide to all things Profoto.
The Profoto D1 is still available and what’s more it’s a formidable piece of kit in its own right. Available in 250, 500 and 1000Ws versions and featuring a 7 f-stop power range that can be adjusted in 1/10 steps, it offers short flash durations even when higher power settings are employed and, with built-in Air support for remote radio sync and control, the Profoto D1 is hugely impressive in all respects.
What’s more, it can be used with an extensive and diverse collection of Profoto modifiers – more than 120, in fact – from barndoors to softboxes.
But Profoto are not just about studio work. The B1 and B2 off-camera flash units are designed for discerning photographers who want to make a step up from speedlights and take their lighting to the next level.
The B1 features 500Ws of lighting power, 2 second recharging times, and when set to lower power settings it can produce up to 20 flashes per second. Furthermore, there’s a High-Speed Sync (HSS) function, and the unit boasts a 9 f-stop range 1/10 increments.
Powered by an integrated battery and compatible with the Profoto Air System, it offers completely wireless functionality for use in the field.
The newer B2 unit offers 250Ws of power and is even smaller and lighter than the B1, for greater portability, and is powered by an external battery pack for connection of 2 heads. It offers recycling times of 1.35 seconds and, like the B1, it can produce up to 20 flashes per second.
Both units integrate with the Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon), Air Remote TTL-N (for Nikon) and Air Remote TTL-S (for Sony). Making use of 8 digital channels, these enable you to control an unlimited number of lights in up to 3 groups from up to 300 metres (1000 feet).
