L’Iris d’Or/Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year!
Andrea Gjestvang’s powerful images of survivors of the Oslo massacre wowed the judges and bagged her the top prize.
Andrea Gjestvang from Norway has been awarded the title of L’Iris d’Or/Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year 2013 at a ceremony in London. She collects a $25,000 prize, having seen off the challenge of more than 122,000 entries from 170 countries.
Her series of images, ‘One Day In History’, tells the stories of survivors of the July 2011 massacre near Oslo, and the judges were united in their belief that Gjestvang should be awarded the top prize.
Meanwhile, Hoang Hiep Nguyen of Vietnam was awarded the title of Open Photographers of the Year, William Eggleston was honoured with an Outstanding Contribution to Photography award, Natalia Wiernik of Poland won Student Focus Photographer of the Year and Alecsandra Dragoi of Romania was named Youth Photographer of the Year.
All the winning images are on display until 12 May 2013 at Somerset House in London.
