This photo, taken by Edinburgh University student, Felix Pretis (22), at Bute Inlet, Canada, has won Our Dynamic Earth’s inaugural photography competition. The competition, which had an ‘Earth Hero’ theme, attracted entries from across the world.

The winning entry (above) shows a coastal brown bear fishing for salmon at the mouth of Orford River, Canada, during the September 2007 salmon run. The photo was taken from the river bank, approximately 30-40 meters from the bear, with a Canon Eos 300D and a Sigma 50-500 lens.

Felix Pretis is a fourth year economics student from Austria, studying at the University of Edinburgh. His passion for wildlife photography has taken him around the world, from photographing the puffins and seals off the coast of Scotland, herons in Austria, Alligators in Georgia and the Alaskan wilderness to capturing the eruption of the Tungurahua Volcano in the Amazon. He has also travelled through Egypt, the Maldives, the Arizona desert and Ecuador.

Felix has won an annual pass to Our Dynamic Earth, a digital photo frame and a professionally printed copy of his image. The five finalist entries are currently on display at Our Dynamic Earth.  For more information visit www.dynamicearth.com
