Here’s how it’s done!

We’ve chosen white as the ‘Canvas extension color’, but of course you can choose any shade you want. Now, dial in a bigger canvas, referring to the original size and making sure to keep the proportions the same.

Step 3 – Stroke

Press Cmd/Ctrl+A to ‘Select All’ and then go to Edit>Stroke.

We’ve opted to apply a black stroke, but this is again up to you. The Location setting can be very useful but for this we want to leave it on ‘Inside’. Ensure that the Blending Mode remains on Normal and the Opacity remains on 100%.

The stroke width can require some experimentation – there’s no preview option available, so be prepared to go back a step in Photoshop’s History window and reapply the Stroke with a different width setting.
