It appears that well-known photographic retailer Jessops has become another retail casualty of the recession.

Many photographers will have purchased kit over the years from the high street – and online – retailer, so it’s sad news that Jessops has today gone into administration.

We’ll bring you more news on this as and when we have it.

–UPDATE–

10/01/13 –  Jessops has now ceased to accept online orders. Unfortunately, this is not a good sign at all.

I worked at Jessops for two years, giving me a superb grounding in the photographic industry. From there I gained employment as a journalist, writing for numerous photographic titles, for ten years. I’ve never forgotten the experience I gained there, and am sad to see such a large part of my youth meet hard times. It goes to show the power of the internet as a retail force, and how the high street needs to react quickly to thrive. After all, Jessops’ major competition, Jacobs, folded earlier this year, so what dedicated retailer other than those online could challenge them?

Saddened by the news of Jessops going into administration. I’ve purchased a lot of equipment from them over the years and was always impressed with the knowledge of the staff. Austerity bites deeper and we’re only just into January. This year could be punishing for retailers. I am shocked to learn of Jacobs’ demise I didn’t know that!

Government need to chop the tax and put it back to 15% drop petrol to 80p come in like with over seas trading like in Malaysia. Make things more affordable , bring town the living cost and support small companies. make power affordable . Everyone in the UK instead of helping are getting what they can,

Digital photography is killing the photographer and the compact camera and phones, killing so much trade in the imaging world. What to do. I used to love London camera exchange and Jessops. Next may be Paplyn

Its sad and crazy, On line shopping in the UK suck and so does e bay due to royal mail pricing. E bay take to much of profit. Its all going to far. it need to be addressed publicly and looked into now.
Enough is enough. may be the history channel is right, The world leaders are driving us into poverty , so we will bow to one leader the promises us hope, That will be a white elephant.

I have been saying this for a long time, the companies that keep flooding the market with all these pocket cameras with high end capabilities in the long run will cut their own throats .
low cost DSLRs and all that. no one can sell photos, no one want to buy prints, Its madness. Destroying what was looked upon as an art and a pleasure, like anything, To much is not good.

Such a sad day. I had put in a ‘buy and collect’ order from one of their stores and got a call from an employee to say that it was ready to pick up. Didn’t really know what to say to them TBH.
