James Hyman Gallery presents an exhibition showcasing a new generation of photographers who have placed London at the heart of their work.

It explores the way that these photographers have taken the capital city as their home and subject matter. It suggests a specificity in their responses to London, whether it be the grey of London light or a type of gritty urban realism particular to the inner city.

THE DETAILS:
London Calling, 25 February – 1 May, James Hyman Gallery, 5 Savile Row, London W1, www.jameshymangallery.com

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHERS:

Anna Fox is one of two Brits shortlisted for this year’s Deutsche Borse Photography Prize, opening at the Photographers Gallery, London, on 12 February. For London Calling she presents 41 Hewitt Road, a movingly documented series of photographs taken in a run down house she shared with her family and lodgers in Finsbury Park, north London. Please see http://www.annafox.co.uk/index2.html

Stephen Gill’s Hackney Wick series began when he came across a street market at which he bought fixed-lens plastic camera for 50p. Stephen is also one of three photographers commissioned for this October’s Brighton Photo Biennial, curated by Martin Parr. In The Times newspaper Martin Parr described Stephen as “the new whiz-kid of British documentary” and his self published book Hackney Flowers as “my favourite photography book of the year”. Other fans of Stephen’s work includes the writers Iain Sinclair and Jon Ronson. Please see http://www.stephengill.co.uk/portfolio/news

Nigel Shafran poignantly records the quiet familiarity of day to day life, lending a conceptual contemplation to stacked plates by a kitchen sink, or shopping on a supermarket conveyor belt. Nigel was one of a group of artists whose work featured in How We Are: Photographing Britain, Tate Britain in 2007. Please see http://www.nigelshafran.com
