19 July – 6 August
Venue: City Hall, Tower Bridge.
Open 8:30am-6pm Monday- Friday
Following its astonishing success in East London, next week sees Hackney’s touring photography exhibition Changing Lives goes London wide at the capital’s famous City Hall. City Hall is home to the Mayor of London, the London Assembly and the 600 or so permanent staff who work for the Greater London Authority. The Tower Bridge destination marks a new edge on the list of the venues hosting Hackney’s community exhibition so far. Travelling from TRA buildings to local art galleries, this time Changing Lives fills a well deserved and spacious foyer in the heart of London. Visitors can visit the impressive 45 meter high glass dome for free, see the exhibition and absorb the stunning riverbank views in the City Hall café.
City Hall exhibitions are usually on topics relating to London or are created by Londoners, and Changing Lives is no exception with it’s distinctively East London community spirit. Commissioned by HCVS, photojournalist Katherine Green celebrates 12 of Hackney’s voluntary and community groups in this inspiring photographic exhibition. Next week, HCVS displays this snapshot of Hackney’s impressive 2,000 voluntary groups, at the distinctive Tower Bridge building, a 45 metre high glass globe.
Chief executive of HCVS, Jake Ferguson said:
‘We at HCVS are really proud of the journey that Changing Lives has taken since its launch at Rivington Place Gallery in March this year. Touring around Hackney, from local estates to libraries, it’s most recently been on display at 155 Broadgate banking building in Liverpool St. The diverse range of these venues really reflects what Changing Lives is all about, showing off Hackney’s communities to those who might not normally have the opportunity or time to notice the hard work that local community organisations and volunteers do in the Borough.
To bring this snapshot of the work to the heart of the Greater London Authority takes the exhibition London wide. Next up on the list is Congress House TUC headquarters, as well as Hackney One Carnival and Stoke Newington Library. We’re reaching the private, public and voluntary sectors, and will continue to do so as the exhibition grows and local community organisations tell us more about the impact they are making.’
The exhibitions is free and open to everyone to see. You can visit parts of City Hall, Mondays to Thursdays from 8.30am to 6pm and Fridays from 8.30am to 5.30pm.
Why not host this exhibition at your venue or meeting? If you could host our exhibition, either on its own or as part of an event, please get in touch. As well as championing the work of the voluntary sector, you’ll get free publicity for your work or organization. Changing Lives will grow and reach as many people as possible, touring the exhibition through the borough throughout the spring and summer with an online record mapping this enriching journey. We have several venues lined up but hope that these inspiring images will illuminate a variety of dynamic spaces in the heart of Hackney. Our exhibition is flexible and easy to transport from one venue to the next.
